About

Maria Segui‐Gomez is a graduate from both the University of the Barcelona School of Medicine and the Harvard University School of Public Health. Since 1991, her work has evolved around securing longer and healthier lives through the eradication of injuries, most notably those following traffic crashes. Her stay at Harvard culminated as Deputy Director of the Harvard Injury Control Center. In 1999, she moved to the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she joined the core faculty of the Injury Control and Research Center and where she still holds an appointment as adjunct associate professor. Upon returning to Spain, she joined the faculty of the University of Navarra where she became a tenured faculty, founder, and director of the European Center for Injury Prevention (2004‐2011), which became a WHO Collaborating Center. In 2011, she was appointed General Director for Public Health, Drug Dependencies and Consumer Affairs in the Regional Government of Castilla‐La Mancha and later she was General Director for Traffic for Spain (2012‐2016). In 2014, Dr. Segui‐Gomez secured recognition as Full Professor by the Spanish academic authority (ANECA). In addition to her Johns Hopkins appointment, she is also Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia Medical School Emergency Department (USA) and the Pontifical University of Comillas (Spain).

Research interests during her 18 years of continued academic work evolved around:

  • Injury information systems (development and quality)
  • Development of injury outcomes measures
  • Effectiveness and economic evaluation of (mostly) motor vehicle‐related injuries

She has authored more than 229 publications and her current H-factor impact (as per Google Scholar) is 28. She secured more than 46 competitive public money grants for her scholarly research.

Her managerial responsibilities as General Director for Traffic in Spain included supervising an annual budget of 800 million euros and the daily operations of approximately 4000 civil workers and 10000 traffic police officers whose primary responsibility was to produce legislation, regulation and practices to ensure smooth and safer traffic in the country. Under her leadership, road fatalities decreased by 18% in Spain despite increasing traffic volume. The lowest road fatalities in Spain since 1960 happened under her directorship in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
